Trains to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne

The ski resorts of the Arc Valley are all easily reached by train. Among them are Valloire and Valmeinier, two resorts in the hills south of the village of St-Michel-de-Maurienne. The local station is called St-Michel-Valloire.

East of Grenoble, the River Arc makes a great loop to the south of the Vanoise Massif. This area, often known as the Maurienne Valley, is one of the great thoroughfares of the Alps. The valley carries the main road and railway from Lyon to Turin. It provides first-class skiing at a fraction of the prices prevailing in the Tarentaise Valley not far away to the north on the other side of the Vanoise Massif. Valloire and Valmeinier are two of about a dozen ski resorts along the valley. Both are popular summer vacation spots too. Valloire is especially popular in summer with cyclists (many with their sights on the formidably challenging ride up the Col du Galibier).

St-Michel-Valloire station is served by direct TGV trains from Paris on peak travel days in the ski season (that’s mainly at weekends). At other times, it’s worth bearing in mind that two other nearby stations on the same line have TGV services every day of the year. These are St-Jean-de-Maurienne which is just ten minutes down the Maurienne Valley, and Modane which is just ten minutes further up the valley. Apart from direct high-speed trains from Paris, both stations also have direct trains from Lyon-St Exupéry (the station for Lyon Airport), Turin and Milan.

St-Michel-Valloire station is served by regular regional express (TER) services, which run up the valley to Modane. Down valley, they go to Chambéry with occasional trains continuing to Lyon. These trains are supplemented by SNCF buses between Chambéry and St-Michel-Valloire. Train tickets are valid on these SNCF bus services. It is easy to reach St-Michel-Valloire in a day from London. The fastest options, via Paris or Lyon – and usually with a further change at Chambéry – take just over eight hours.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
